I created WebEquity.com.au (and then WebEquity.org) after spending a lot of time sitting on brilliant ideas for web-based businesses, slowly developing them myself, only to learn that a much quicker competitor beat me to launch; or launching websites that were sound businesses, but looked awful (I'm not a designer), detracting from their success.

My belief is that it's more important to get an idea realised than it is to over-protect the intellectual property and the best way of doing that is to rely on associates with specific areas of expertise. There are very few original ideas on the Internet, and those that do emerge are quickly copied, improved upon and/or outdated.

If you can develop a reliable team, each with a stake in the success of your idea, great businesses can flourish.
